Common Phenomena in Periodic Systems (10 minutes)

  • This course focuses on studying the phenomena that occur in periodic systems. In particular, we will discuss three observable events in depth.
    1. Sound waves in a crystal.
      • Specifically, this event results from the mechanical displacement of atoms in the crystal from equilibrium.
      • Calculation one might do: Finding the speed of sound in a solid.

  1. Light waves in opal and photonic crystals.
    • Calculation one might do: Finding the first allowed wavelength of propagation in a crystal.

  1. Electron waves in an atomic crystal.
    • Calculation one might do: Investigating how a semiconductor gets its band gap.
