Common Phenomena in Periodic Systems (10 minutes)
- This course focuses on studying the phenomena that occur in periodic systems. In particular, we will discuss three observable events in depth.
- Sound waves in a crystal.
- Specifically, this event results from the mechanical displacement of atoms in the crystal from equilibrium.
- Calculation one might do: Finding the speed of sound in a solid.
- Light waves in opal and photonic crystals.
- Calculation one might do: Finding the first allowed wavelength of propagation in a crystal.
- Electron waves in an atomic crystal.
- Calculation one might do: Investigating how a semiconductor gets its band gap.
