Keywords: Vector Calculus, Green's Theorem, Line Integrals

Highlights of the activity

  1. This small group activity is designed to motivate the relationship between integrals around boundaries and integrals over the interior.
  2. Students work in small groups to evaluate a particular integral around the boundary of simple regions.
  3. The whole class wrap-up discussion brings out the idea that such integrals contain information about the interior of the regions, in this case the area, providing a concrete example of Area Corollary to Green's/Stokes' Theorem.

Reasons to spend class time on the activity

Useful application of (or introduction to) the Area Corollary of Green's Theorem.
