===== Prerequisites =====

Students should be able to interpret the expression
$y(t) = A\sin(\omega t+\phi)$ as an oscillating function with amplitude $A$,
period $T$ = $2\pi/\omega$, and recognize that $\phi$ shifts the time origin.

Most students have encountered functions that oscillate in time; few have
applied the same reasoning to functions of space.
