Energy is coming to us from the sun in the form of light. What happens when light from the sun shines on the earth?
* Some gets reflected. Some absorbed.
Use light sensor to compare reflection from water and sand. (water reflects more than sand). Use digital thermometers to measure temperature change of equal masses of room temperature water and room temperature sand.text/html2012-10-18T09:27:59-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day8:daily_schedule

* Place lamp in center of room on stool, to represent the sun.
* Have students form a circle around the lamp
* Have students rotate (spin) in place to model the earth rotating daily
* Have them face the lamp to represent noon
* Have them face away from the lamp to represent midnight. Ask them what can each see at midnight? (call on each student to state what seeing...wall clock, white board, door, other whiteboard)
* Have students walk around the lamp to model the earth orbiting the …text/html2012-09-27T11:21:21-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day8:reflections

Share the graph from the melting ice to boiling water experiment. Point out that the graph is level during melting and boiling.
* Latent heat: heat needed or released when change phases (temperature does not change)
* (Latent Heat of melting)/(fusion)=(heat energy needed to melt)/(freeze water)
* (latent heat of vaporation)/(condensation) = (heat needed to boil)/(condense water)/(steam)text/html2012-10-18T09:26:46-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day8:start
