Students are asked to recored their current knowledge on these questions:
* Consider (without touching) four plates:two metal plates, a wooden plate, a styrofoam plate. Rank these in order of temperature. Explain the reasoning for your predicted rankings.
* Touch the 4 plates. Rank these in order of temperature. Explain the reasoning for your ranking.text/html2012-10-11T09:38:03-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day5:exploring_thermal_phenomena

* Measure temperatures with standard thermometer
- find the plates are the same temperature or close to same temperature; at least not the expected big difference between the metal and Styrofoam * Small groups discuss why this might be
* Small groups report findings and theories
* Whole group discussion:text/html2012-10-11T09:25:10-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day5:going_on_a_field_trip_to_the_roof_to_observe_the_sun_and_moon

Before heading to the roof we had students share their findings on the moon questions they were asked to create during week 1.
Once on the Roof
Ask students the following questions:
* How many of you saw the moon yesterday?
* What was the shape of the moon yesterday? (half lit)
* What was the angle formed by pointing your arms at the moon and sun yesterday? (right)
* Talk about a Third Quarter Moon (a moon that is half lit on the left side). The angle formed is a right angle.

Moon Dance: Divide into groups of two. One person be the earth. The other person be the moon. The sun is the sun. Act out what we have seen over the past week. Start from a position in which the Sun is the Sun, one person is the earth pointing one arm at the sun and one arm at the “moon” with the obtuse angle we observed last Tuesday . Then the “moon” person should move to represent where the moon was on Thursday. Then the “moon” person should move to represent where the moon is n…text/html2012-10-09T11:37:09-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day5:reflecting

Student 1
Learned: I didn't know there was such thing as a new moon until today.
Wants to Know: I want to learn more about temperature.
Student 2
Learned:how all the plates felt different to touch but were the same temperature
Wants to Know: what other materials are insulators
Student 3
Learned: how the moon, sun and earth move. Learning in multiple ways really helped me.
Wants to Know: why the moon is sometimes blocked by the earth.
Student 4
Learned: about heat conductivity an…text/html2012-09-27T11:20:28-08:00days:fall2012daybyday:fall2012day5:reflections
