Literacy Brainstorming Webs

Fall 2009 - Day 4

Over the course of the term, the students create several brainstorming webs. By jotting down words and drawing pictures, students recall information that they already know about a subject. Working in pairs or small groups allows students to share their ideas and scaffold their learning. Students are able to view multiple perspectives and different avenues of the subject when they watch and listen to their peers present their brainstorming webs.

For this activity, the students created brainstorming webs about literacy. The instructor prompted them by asking:

What is literacy? What does it mean to you? How have you learned it in the past? What do you envision doing with your students in the future to teach literacy?
