Directions
Some ice and a little bit of water are placed in a glass beaker. The beaker is placed on a heater. Eventually the ice melts. The heater continues to heat the liquid water. Eventually the water begins to boil. The heater continues to heat the boiling water.
Sketch a graph that illustrates your prediction for the way the temperature of the contents of the beaker change during this process.

Instructor Comments
This diagnostic question provides a nice segue between the unit on thermal phenomena and the unit on motion graphs. The students have an opportunity to apply their knowledge of heat and temperature phenomena in a new context, graphing.
