| The instructor asked the students to classify, or group, a large quantity of items in any way they chose. With little information about the new unit of study, the students agreed upon grouping the items by what they were made of. Collaboratively, they made piles of items that fit into the categories of plastic, paper/wood, metal, and rubber. |  |
| To segue into a new unit on magnetism, the instructor explained to the students that these items could be grouped in alternative ways, such as magnetic or non-magnetic. With new categories, the students rearranged the items into two distinct groups by using the magnet that was conveniently an item that they were already using. |  |
