Scientists use a spectrophotometer to accurately measure how clear or cloudy a bacterial solution is. This tells them how many bacterial cells are present in the solution. This is called cell density.

How it works: Scientists use the spectrophotometer to measure cell density of a small sample of bacteria in liquid. Light can pass through a clear solution with few bacteria while less light passes through a cloudy solution with many bacteria.
