Rebekah is asking if people read broadly and that AERA has been talking about this as an issue - for example are people using ethnography Dedra says that physicists don't think ethnography is of value to physics Wendy says that generalizing evidence to explanation -> creating a story from the facts is a scientific activity which parallels qualitative research Rebekah says that it might describe but not explain (a dilema that exists in qualitative research) Interesting question of what constitutes an explanation - whether in science or in qualitative data Rebekah says that working with different stakeholders in the educational spectrum - lifelong aspect of education is important - and staying only within an institution limits seeing normative ideas - we don't see the limitations and boxes we put ourselves into Robin wants to know what kind of questions we might want to try to address Rebekah says interest in seeing how people learn and develop within institutions -> why do we keep doing the same things and can't break out of it -> hit the same problems and try to do the same stuff - we have different resources to bring but see repeated mistakes - when will the collaboration name a mistake and say 'we don't have to make it' (this is in context of policy to practice issues) Dedra is emphasizing the aspect of reinventing the wheel Wendy says how can we build on what's already been done Rebekah says that this is surprising especially what Robin said about engineering ed folks just understanding what methodology is
