Department of Chemistry Override Policy

In all but simple cases (pre-approved), overrides must be approved by the course instructor.  If the instructor is unavailable, the Chemistry Chief Advisor (Pastorek), the Assistant Chief Advisor (Ingle) or Department Chair (Gable) will decide whether to approve an override.  Once the override is approved, the student will be contacted by email with an explanation on how to register for the course and advise that they must register by 12:00 p.m. (noon) of the following business day or the override will be removed.  If the student does not have a PIN they must first see their academic advisor at OSU before obtaining an override.

Prerequisite Overrides:

1.  The student must provide a transcript showing that they have completed the prereq courses (unofficial copy okay).   Office staff (Luanne or Paula) can confirm the articulation of many prereq chemistry courses using the chemistry advising web page http://www.chemistry.oregonstate.edu/undergrad/advising/Chemistry_transfer_to_OSU.htm.

2.  OSU students and those dual-enrolled at community colleges qualify for a prereq override when they are currently enrolled and participating in the prerequisite course.  All other students must provide evidence of having completed the course in question.  Registration for a future course (e.g., a summer course during Spring registration, a Fall course during the summer) does not qualify for a prereq override.

3.  If the course is not already articulated on the advising web page or if more information is needed, the student must contact the course instructor, assistant chief advisor, or chief advisor to have their transcript reviewed for approval of an override.  The Chemistry Department office staff can assist making this contact.  The student should bring a copy of the course syllabus if possible or provide a copy by e-mail.

4.  A common request that requires the instructor's approval is for students to take both the prereq and the Chemistry course at the same time, such as MTH 254 and CH 440.  Approval for such a situation must be made by the course instructor.

 Capacity Overrides:

The student is advised to monitor the online schedule of classes for a space to open.   If the student is asking about Experimental Chemistry I & II (CH 36X/46X) they should contact Dr. Pastorek directly. If the student is asking about Quantitative Analysis, CH 324, they should contact Dr. Sleszynski directly.

 Time Conflict Overrides:

The student must decide which class he/she will be missing in order to attend the other. The Department of the class he/she will be missing must issue the override since they are approving the student to miss their class.  For example, if a student will miss the last 20 minutes of a PAC class to attend a Chemistry class they must contact the PAC class Department requesting an override.

If a student will miss part of a Chemistry class then the student must contact the chemistry instructor for approval and an override.

Process for Issuing the Override:

If the instructor determines that the student qualifies to take their course, the instructor must email Luanne (and cc Paula) with the approval for the prereq override. The approval must include the type of override to be issued, the student's name, ID number and course section CRN number(s).

Once approved, staff will then issue the override, and email the student and the instructor.  The student must register by 12:00 p.m. (noon) of the following business day or the override   will be removed.
