STUDENT DIRECTIONS FOR EXPERIMENT 2 ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDIES PART A POTENTIOMETRY

1. Before coming to class carefully study pages 2-11 of the write-up. Pages 92-101-109 and 342-359 in Quantitative Chemical analysis by Harris are strongly recommended as background material.

2. First thing in class listen to the audio-cassette tape while reading the accompanying booklet, "Potentiometry".

3. Prepare the solutions (write-up pg. 7).

4. Carry out the measurements for solutions 1 and 2 (pp.8-9)

5. Clean-up (pg. 9).

STUDENT DIRECTIONS FOR EXPERIMENT 2 ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDIES PART B VOLTAMMETRY

Before coming to class, read pages 14-32 of the lab manual. Pages 468-470 and 483-501 in Quantitative Chemical Analysis by Harris are strongly recommended as background material.

1. Listen to the audio-cassette tape while reading the accompanying booklet entitled "Introduction to Voltammetric Techniques".

2. Prepare the solutions listed on page 26 (part b). The ethylenediamine is kept in the refrigerator.

3. Receive additional instruction on the operation of the voltammetric instrument.

4. Carry out the experiments of part B5c-g on pages 27-29.

5. Cleanup as described on page 30.

STUDENT DIRECTIONS FOR EXPERIMENT 2 ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDIES PART C ANODIC STRIPPING VOLTAMMETRY

1. Before class, read and study pages 33 to 36 of the writeup. Pages 501-503 in Quantitative Chemical Analysis by Harris are strongly recommended as background material. If you do this part before part 2B, you should read the back ground material in the writeup for part 2B.

2. As soon as you come to class, listen to the audio-cassette tape "Anodic Stripping Voltammetry".

3. Prepare the three solutions listed on page 34 of the writeup. Clean the glassware and cell as described before use.

4. Receive instructions on operation of the voltammetric instrument in the ASV mode and carry out the measurements described on page 35-36 of the writeup.

5. When you are finished, clean the cell with 10%(v/v) nitric acid and then rinse and fill with deionized water.
