Abstract:
A quantitative
analysis was attempted to determine the concentration of nicotine in green bell
peppers. A liquid extraction of nicotine was carried out, and the extract was
injected into a GC/MS instrument with selected ion monitoring. Initially it was
planned to make use of an internal standard, but problems with chromatogram
resolution required the construction of a calibration curve with respect to
nicotine only. The average concentration of nicotine obtained was 14.8 +
11.6 ug/kg fruit. Ultimately, the results were inadequate and further method
development is needed.
