Analysis of metal ion content in urine of Team Cannonball

Brandon James

Jesse Allen

Nilesh Patel

CH 461-2004

Abstract:

We were curious about the amount of certain trace elements in our urine excretions. We decided to test for zinc, Calcium, magnesium, strontium, iron, and cadmium. Samples were taken every morning. After the first sample was taken for a reference, we began supplementing with Centrum multi-vitamins, three times daily. The samples were analyzed on the ICP-AES instrument. We discovered unhealthy levels of some of the elements in our samples; Jesse had hazardous levels of cadmium; Nilesh may be deficient in iron. There were no obvious trends found. Nilesh’s levels declined every day, which shows a trend, albeit a mind boggling one. Jesse and Brandon’s samples showed no clear trends, as can be seen on the graphs.
