Assessment of Lead Levels in Paint Obtained from Oregon State University by ICP-AES ('03)

G.E. Lindberg, Y.W. Pan and E.H. Camp

In conjunction with microwave digestion under acidic conditions, the lead levels of paint samples were analyzed by ICPAES.  Paint samples were obtained from five older buildings on the OSU Corvallis campus.  The lead content of the paint samples were found to have significant variation which may be attributed to differences in sample quality as well as inherent difference in the paint.  The lead levels were found to range from 0.04 mg Pb per gram sample to 120 mg Pb per gram.  The presence of lead in all the collected samples indicates the wide scope of the public health issuer underlying lead exposure.
