Some specific guidelines for the Unknown Acid lab report

  1. All sections except Questions and Theory are required
  2. See below for what your Title Page should look like.
  3. Abstract, Procedure, Data, and References - see lab manual
  4. Calculations - be sure you show all the calculations, including those for the error analysis.
  5. Error Analysis - You should discuss any errors that you know occurred (e.g. you went past the endpoint on one of the titrations).  You should also discuss the effect the errors would have on your calculated molar mass (i.e. if you went slightly past the endpoint would that make your molar mass too high or too low.  Be sure to explain your reasoning).  Since you did at least three trials you should calculate an average molar mass and a standard deviation (or some measure of the spread of your three trials).  If you decide to throw out one of your trails be sure to explain why.  Calculate and report a percent difference between your molar mass and the molar mass of what you believe the substance to be.
  6. Be sure you consider significant figures!  You should be able to justify your choice of the number of significant figures you use in your answer.
  7. Conclusion - brief summary of your results.
  8. BE SURE THAT ALL NUMBERS THAT SHOULD HAVE UNITS ON THEM DO HAVE UNITS!!!
