Some specific guidelines for
the Synthesis of Aspirin lab report
All sections are required except Theory and Questions
- Title Page
- Abstract
- Procedure, Data, and References are self-explanatory
- Calculations - be sure you do all the calculations required.
- Error Analysis - Calculate your percent yield and briefly talk about the difference between
your actual
yield and the theoretical yield. What are some reasonable sources of error - did
you spill anything? Could some of your product still be dissolved in the
solvent (pertinent question - what is the solubility of aspirin in water?) (Don't list
things like "Maybe I didn't use the graduated cylinder correctly" If you
weren't sure how to use it then you should have asked before you did that part
of the lab)
- Use the proper number of significant figures (justify your choice) and
proper units.
Since either high school chemistry or CH 121 is a prerequisite for this
course, we assume that you know about conversions between molar mass and
number of moles, how to use stoichiometry to determine limiting reagents and
theoretical yields. If you are a bit hazy on these topics read Chapter 3
sections 8, 9, 10. Feel free also to ask for help from the TAs and
instructors.
The report is due on Monday, 29 June 2009.
